Tri-2-thienylmethyl radical (3), generated by reduction of tri-2-thienylcarbenium tetrafluoroborate (4) with Zn at 65 °C, dimerizes to give 2-(di-2-thienylmethylene)-5-tri-2-thienylmethyl-2,5-dihydrothiophene (5) and a diastereomeric mixture of 5,5′-bis(di-2-thienylmethylene)-2,2′,5,5′-tetrahydro-2,2′bithiophene (6).
