Novel Aerobic Oxidation of Primary Sulfones to Carboxylic Acids

Primary alkyl aryl sulfones are converted to the corresponding carboxylic acids in fair to excellent yield through double deprotonation and exposure to atmospheric oxygen. The methodology allows for the convenient synthesis of C-13 labeled carboxylic acids.

benzyl alcohol derivatives were used as alkylation reagents. Herein, we report α-alkylation of sulfones using alcohols catalyzed by a pincer complex of earth-abundant manganese. The Mn-PNN-bipyridyl complex exhibited good performance in reactionselectivity. The amount of base also had an important influence on the smooth transformation.
