Abstract
Nanoparticles of zirconium(IV) oxide catalyze the three-component coupling of aromatic aldehydes, b-diketones and urea to afford the correspo nding 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones (Biginelli compounds) in moderate to good yields under mild conditions.

Propane phosphonic acid anhydride has been found to promote the Biginellisynthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones. The use of this agent is characterized by moderate costs, low toxicity and simple workup conditions.

In this study, the synthesis of some new 5-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-6-methyl-4-(substituted phenyl)-2(1H)-pyrimidinones has been reported. The compounds were prepared by the Biginelli reaction of acetylacetone with aromatic aldehydes and urea.
