The reaction is catalyzed by (R)-3,3'-dibromo-BINOL in the presence of stoichiometric SnCl(4), and is the first example of a tandem conjugate addition/asymmetric protonation reaction using a BINOL·SnCl(4) complex as the catalyst. The new Ru(IV) salt, [Ru(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(Cp*)(CH(3)CN)(2)](PF(6))(2), is an excellent catalyst for the regioselective allylation of a variety of indole compounds usingallylalcohol as substrate; there are no co-catalysts required in this chemistry and the yields and reaction conditions are very favorable.
