    A new general synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds based on enamine chemistry

    Alkylation of enamines and enamine salts by benzylic and (beta-haloethyl)aryl halides, respectively, followed by acidic cyclodehydration and dehydrogenation provides an efficient synthetic approach to a wide range of polycyclic aromatic compounds of diverse structural types. Specific polycyclic hydrocarbons synthesized by this route include benzo[a]- and benzo[c]fluorene, 7H-dibenzo[c,g]-, 13H-dibenzo[a,i]-, and 13H-dibenzo[a,g]fluorene, 15H-tribenzo[a,c,i]fluorene, dibenzo[b,def]chrysene, benzo[rst]pentaphene, indeno[1,2-b]fluorene, fluoreno[3,4-c]fluorene, octahydrodibenz[a,j]anthracene, dibenz[a,j]anthracene, octahydrodibenz[a,h]anthracene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, picene, benzo[c]picene, 1H-benz[bc]aceanthrylene, and 4H-cyclopenta[def]chrysene. This method with appropriate modifications appears to be potentially broader in scope than established traditional methods of polycyclic hydrocarbon synthesis.

    Iodine transfer radical polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising (meth)acrylic acid, salt thereof, or combination thereof, in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, an organoiodide, and a solvent, is a useful method for making (meth)acrylic acid polymers. The amounts of components utilized can be 2 to 100 equivalents of acrylic acid and 2 to 100 equivalents of sodium acrylate, both dissolved in water to form a 15 to 50 weight percent solution, based on the total weight of the acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, and water; 0.05 to 1 equivalent of an azo polymerization initiator, 1 equivalent of an organoiodide; and 0 to 3 equivalents of an iodide salt. (Meth)acrylic acid polymer solutions are made by these methods. The (meth)acrylic polymers are useful as dispersants.

    [GRAPHICS]Three kinds of out/out-equatorial bis( formylmethano)[ 60] fullerenes ( 1b-d) were obtained by the tether-directed bifunctionalization of [ 60] fullerene with bis( alpha-formylsulfonium ylide) s. The condensation of aromatic amines with 1b-d proceeded with an unexpectedly high regioselectivity to give one of two possible regioisomers of mono-imines as the main products ( the ratio of the regioisomers, up to 97: 3). By the transformation of the remaining formyl group in the mono-imines thus obtained, the corresponding dissymmetric bis-imines were efficiently synthesized.

    The tether-directed method was firstly applied to the biscyclopropanation of [60]fullerene via the addition-elimination reaction of bis(sulfonium ylide)s to give bis(formylmethano)[60]fullerenes with satisfactory regio- and stereoselectivity. The equatorialbisadduct thus obtained was used for the polycondensation with an aromatic diamine to afford the corresponding pearl-necklace polyimine with satisfactorily high degree of polymerization.
