  A diphenylacetylene compound of the formula [1]: wherein R is a C₁-C₁₂ alkyl group, a C₂-C₁₂ alkenyl group or a C₂-C₁₆ alkoxyalkyl group; X¹, X², X³, X⁴, Y¹, Y², Y³ and Y⁴ are independently from each other a -CH- group, a -CF- group or a nitrogen atom; A is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a trifluoromethyl group, a trifluoromethoxy group, a cyano group, a 4-R¹-(cycloalkyl) group, 4-R¹-(cycloalkenyl) group or a R¹-(O)m group in which R¹ is a C₁-C₁₂ alkyl group, a C₂-C₁₂ alkenyl group or a C₂-C₁₂ alkynyl group; and m is 0 or 1, which has an excellent anisotropy of refractive index and a low viscosity and is useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition.
