Abstract Seven species and two varieties of Zanthoxylum in Japan were investigated for unsaturated aliphatic acid amides. In addition to the known amides α-sanshool, γ-sanshool and hydroxy-γ-sanshool, a new compound, hydroxy-α-sanshool, was isolated and established by chemical and spectroscopic evidence.
