few years. Here we report its use with protic nucleophiles in a catalytic manner for the in situ generation of protons that lead to the proteo functionalization of activated olefins. Utilizing the latter protocol, proteo etherification of enamides gives rise to N,O-acetals in nearly quantitative yields.

The present invention relates to a composition for producing an N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide, the composition including (A) an N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic acid amide and (B) a carboxylic acid amide other than the N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic acid amide and the N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide, and satisfying the following conditions (1) to (4): (1) the composition has a melting point of 0 to 30° C.; (2) a water content is 0 to 1.00% by mass in a total amount of the composition; (3) a content ratio of the component (A) to the component (B) is 4.0 to 20.0 in terms of a molar ratio; and (4) a 5% by mass aqueous solution of the composition has a pH of 4.0 to 8.0. The present invention also relates to a method for producing an N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide, the method including thermally decomposing or catalytically decomposing the composition for producing an N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide.
A method for producing an N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide is provided, the method focusing on unsaturated aldehydes that are contained as impurities generated during a reaction. The method for producing an N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide includes a step for controlling the contained amount of unsaturated aldehydes in the N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide to be not more than 20 mass ppm.

N-.alpha.-alkoxyethyl carboxylic compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.5 means hydrogen, an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, especially hydrogen or a methyl group, and Wherein R.sup.6 means an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, especially a methyl group, Are prepared by electrolysis of secondary N-ethylcarboxylic acid amides of the formula ##STR2## with alcohols of the formula R.sup.6 OH, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 having the aforesaid meaning, while employing tetraalkyl ammonium tetrafluoroborates, tetraalkyl ammonium hexafluorophosphates as well as alkali-tetrafluoroborates as conducting salts and a current quantity of at least 2.5 Faraday/mole of N-ethylcarboxylic acid amide. The N-.alpha.-alkylethyl compounds are valuable intermediate products for the preparation of N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides which may then be converted to water-soluble polymers having multiple properties for technical application.

A process for producing N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic amides by reacting alcohols of 1-5 carbon atoms with N-vinylcarboxylic amides in the presence of an acidic catalyst, or by utilizing unreacted starting material, unreacted intermediate or unrecovered product for synthesis of N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic amides. A process for producing N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic amides by adding a water-soluble strong acid during reaction between a carboxylic amide and a starting material containing acetaldehyde and alcohol and/or a starting material containing an acetal, in an amount of 2 x 10-3 to 3 x 10-1 equivalents to 1 mole of the carboxylic amide in the starting material, and using a strongly acidic ion-exchange resin as the catalyst.
