An essentially anhydrous agitated mixture of (i) finely-divided essentially anhydrous alkali metal fluoride (e.g., KF), (ii) haloaromatic compound having at least one halogen atom of atomic number greater than 9 on an aromatic ring (e.g., C

Cl

), and (iii) an organo guanidinium salt catalyst (e.g., [(Et

]Br), is heated at a temperature at which fluorine replaces one or more of the ring halogen atoms of the haloaromatic compound. A new synthetic route to hexahydrocarbyl guanidinium salts is also described.

A polymer containing a recurring unit of a conjugated N-fluoropyridinium salt and an active material for a positive electrode, an electrolyte, a battery material for the positive electrode and a battery which use such a polymer. That polymer provides a battery material and a primary battery or a secondary battery which have high electromotive force, high energy density, high environmental acceptibility, a low internal resistance in charging and discharging and strong recoverability of the electromotive force, and can be useful as a fluorinating agent.

A process for the preparation of monovalent or divalent organo guanidinium salts is described. If the product is a monovalent organo guanidinium salt, the process comprises mixing together a halohydrocarbon, an inorganic base, and a salt of unsubstituted guanidine. If the product is a divalent organo guanidinium compound, the process comprises mixing together a first halohydrocarbon, an inorganic base, and a salt of unsubstituted guanidine, followed by mixing of a second halohydrocarbon with the mixture so formed; this is followed by the mixing of a third halohydrocarbon with the mixture formed from the mixing of the second halohydrocarbon. Both processes do not require the absence of water; the use of an organic solvent is optional.
Chromium oxide is a good catalyst for scrambling halogens among polyhaloaromatic compounds. Chloropentafluorobenzene and bromopentafluorobenzene disproportionate to hexafluorobenzene and the respective tetrafluorodihalobenzenes. Pentachloro- and pentafluoropyridines produce pyridines with intermediate numbers of both types of halogens. Cyano, trifluoromethyl and a single hydrogen can be present on the aromatic rings without interfering with the chemistry.
