    Three new anilido-oxazolines, ortho-C6H4(NHAr′)(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazoline) [Ar′ = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl, HNPhTriMeOxa (1); 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, HNPhDiiPrOxa (2); 2-methoxyphenyl, HNPhOMeOxa (3)], have been prepared. Reactions of 1 or 2 with one molar equivalent of ZnEt2 in tetrahydrofuran or hexane solution give the zinc ethyl complexes (NPhTriMeOxa)ZnEt (4) and (NPhDiiPrOxa)ZnEt (5). The dinuclear zinc benzyloxide complexes, [(NAr′Oxa)Zn(µ-OBn)]2, [Ar′ = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl, (6); 2-methoxyphenyl, (7)], were synthesized by the reaction of 4 with one molar equivalent of benzyl alcohol in tetrahydrofuran solution (for 6) or by treatment of 3 with one molar equivalent of ZnEt2 in tetrahydrofuran solution followed by the addition of one molar equivalent of benzyl alcohol (for 7). The molecular structures are reported for compounds 6 and 7. Their catalytic activities toward the ring opening polymerization reactions are under investigation.

    A series of magnesium bis(amido-oxazolinate) complexes have been described. Reactions of six amido-oxazolinate ligand precursors, HNC2MeOxa, HNC2OMeOxa, HNC2StBuOxa, HNPhOxa, HNPhOMeOxa or HNPhSMeOxa, with half molar equivalent of MgnBu2 in hexane yield the magnesium bis(amido-oxazolinate) complexes, (NC2EOxa)2Mg [C2E = propyl, (NC2MeOxa)2Mg (1); C2E = 2-methoxyethyl, (NC2OMeOxa)2Mg (2); C2E = 2-tert-butylthioethyl, (NC2StBuOxa)2Mg (3)], or magnesium bis(anilido-oxazolinate) complexes, (NArOxa)2Mg [Ar = phenyl, (NPhOxa)2Mg (4); Ar = 2-methoxyphenyl, (NPhOMeOxa)2Mg (5); Ar = 2-methylthiophenyl, (NPhSMeOxa)2Mg (6)], respectively. The molecular structures are reported for compounds 1, 2, 5 and 6. Their catalytic activities toward the ring opening polymerisation of L-lactide in the presence of benzyl alcohol are also under investigation.

  • Synthesis, structural investigations and ethylene polymerization of titanium complexes with tripodal oxazoline ligands

    A series of tripodal nitrogen containing ligands including amidine and aminopyridines with extra oxazoline functionality were synthesized. The corresponding titanium complexes bearing such ligands were synthesized by diethylamine elimination route. Diethylamidotitanium trichloride [Et2NTiCl3] reacts with the functionalized anilines, 2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-N-(2-fluorophenyl)-aniline (FOxH) and 2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-N-(2-methoxyphenyl)aniline (MeOOxH), the amidine(E)-N’-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-N-(2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenyl)benzimidamide ( Am OxH), and the aminopyridines N-(2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro oxazol-2-yl)phenyl)-6-(piperidin-1-yl)pyridin-2-amine (ApOxH) and N-(2-(4,4- dimethyl- 4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenyl)-6-(2,4,6-triisopropyl phenyl)pyridin-2-amine (Ap*OxH), under diethylamine elimination to form the corresponding titanium trichlorides [FOxTiCl3], [MeOOxTiCl3], [AmOxTiCl3], [ApOxTiCl3] and [Ap*OxTiCl3] in excellent yields. These compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods, and X-ray crystal structure analysis (selected complexes). Furthermore, their behavior in ethylene polymerization was explored. The complexes show moderate activity towards ethylene if activated with MAO. The observed PEs were analyzed by HT-GPC and were found to be of low molecular weight for the amidinate AmOxTiCl3 but of very high one (Mp up to 3.5 million g/mol) for the aminopyridinate Ap*OxTiCl3 titanium complex.
