    The liquid crystal behaviour of linear [AuX(CNC 6 H 4 OC n H 2n +1 )] (X=halogen) complexes is tuned by systematically changing the structure of the isocyanide ligand. The changes studied are lateral fluorination at the 2- and 3-positions of the phenyl ring and modification of the rod-like structure of the complexes by addition of two alkoxy chains at themeta positions. None of the free isocyanides used here are liquid crystals, but all the gold complexes prepared display mesomorphic properties, except iodo(2-fluoro-4-butoxyphenyl isocyanide)gold(i). The (2- and (3-fluorophenyl isocyanide)gold(i) complexes show smectic A mesophases, except the 2-fluoro derivative with n=6, which shows a nematic phase, while the (3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl isocyanide)gold compounds display columnar hexagonal phases at room temperature.

    We report the synthesis of disk-shape liquid crystalline materials using multi-component reactions (MCR). Two new series, 3,9-di(3′,4′,5′-tris-alkyloxy)phenyl-2,3,4,8,9,10-hexahydronaphtho[1,2-e:5,6-e']bis([1,3]oxazine) and 3,10-di((3′,4′,5′-tris-alkyloxy)phenyl)-2,3,4,9,10,11-hexahydronaphtho[1,2-e:4,3-e']bis([1,3]oxazine) synthesized by coupling either 2,3-dihydroxy naphthalene or 2,6-dihydroxy naphthalene

    Disclosed is an organic piezoelectric material which has excellent piezoelectric characteristics and excellent handling properties. Also disclosed are an ultrasound transducer using the organic piezoelectric material, an ultrasound probe, and an ultrasound medical diagnostic imaging system. Specifically disclosed is an organic piezoelectric material which contains a base material that is formed from a resin, and a specific compound (1) that has at least one linking group selected from among specific linking groups. The organic piezoelectric material is characterized in that the relation shown below is satisfied when the CLogP values of the specific compound (1) and the base material are respectively represented by CLogP(1) and CLogP(base material). Relation: |CLogP(1)−CLogP(base material)|≦3.0.

  • A New Class of Discotic Mesogens Derived from Tris(<i>N</i>-salicylideneaniline)s Existing in <i>C</i><sub>3</sub><i><sub>h</sub></i> and <i>C</i><i><sub>s</sub></i> Keto-Enamine Forms

    Two series of a unique class of columnar liquid crystals derived from tris(N-salicylideneaniline)s [TSANs] in which the proton and the electron interact with each other through the H-bonding environment are reported. The synthesis is carried out by condensing 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol with the respective dialkoxyanilines or trialkoxyanilines. H-1 NMR and H-1-H-1 COSY NMR studies revealed their existence as an inseparable mixture of two keto-enamine tautomeric forms with C-3h and C-s rotational symmetries instead of the expected enol-imine form. The influence of the number of peripheral alkoxy tails on the columnar mesomorphic behavior is investigated by using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray scattering. The fluid/glassy columnar states probed for a number of representative compounds confirmed the D-6h (hexagonal) or D-2h (rectangular) symmetry of the columns. The electronic absorption and emission characteristics of these compounds have been studied in both mesomorphic and solution states. Of special interest, the photoluminescence spectra of solution and fluid/ glassy two-dimensional structure evidently disclose the promising light generating capability of these new discotics systems.

    1,3,5-Trisacetoacetamidobenzene with three 1,3-diketo groups was synthesized by the reaction of 1,3,5- triaminobenzene with diketene. Discotic hydrazone compounds were prepared by the diazo coupling reaction between 1,3,5- trisacetoacetamidobenzene and diazonium salts of 4-alkyloxyphenylamines. The compounds existed in hydrazone forms exclusively, being stabilized by the intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and showed discotic nematic or columnar hexagonal mesophases.
