In connection with the synthesis of system 1, preparation of certain benzotropylium salts and benzotropones has been investigated. Action of NBS on benzocycloheptatriene yielded 1,2-benzo-1,3,5-cycloheptatrien-7-yl-N-succinimide, a ready substrate for benzotropylium ion generation.
