    Unusual smectic phases organized by novel λ-shaped mesogenic molecules

  • Influence of the Alkyl Spacer Length on the Phase Transition Behaviour of the λ-Shaped Liquid Crystal

    We reported that a novel A-shaped liquid-crystalline molecule I-6 in which a cyanobiphenyl and two phenylpyrimidine groups are connected to 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid exhibits an incommensurate SmA phase. In the present study, we have prepared the homologous series of the A-shaped molecules I-n (n = 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12) and investigated effect of the spacer length on the phase transition behaviour. Compounds I-4, I-8 and I-12 with an even member of atoms in spacer showed the phase sequences of N-SmA-Cr or SmA-Cr. On the other hand, the odd members 1-7 and 1-9 showed the phase sequence of N-SmA-SmCanti-Cr.
  • Topological Effect in Dimeric Liquid Crystals

    We have prepared some new dimeric liquid crystals in which two phenylpyrimidine moieties are connected via (+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol or p-toluenesulfon amide and investigated the transition behaviour. (+/-)-trans-1,2-Bis6-[4-(5-octylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenoxy]hexyloxy)cyclohexane 1 was found to show enantiotropic nematic (N) and smectic A (SnA) phases with a low melting point. On the other hand, N-p-toluensulfonyl-bis6-[4-(5-octylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenoxy}hexyloxy}amine 2 showed only a monotropic SmA phase. We discuss topological effect of the connecting group on the phase transition behaviour.
  • Synthesis and Phase Transition Behavior of Novel Liquid Crystal Tetramers

    We synthesized novel liquid crystal tetramers possessing cyanobiphenyl and phenylpyrimidine moieties, and investigated their phase transition behavior. The liquid crystal tetramers exhibited nematic (N) and smectic A (SmA) phases. X-ray diffraction measurements suggest that the SmA phase has an intercalated structure. We discuss the transition behavior of the newly designed tetramers in terms of their molecular shape.

    Ionic mesogenic compounds of formula (I) can be used to form liquid crystal displays, such as ferroelectric liquid crystal displays, having enhanced anti-image sticking properties. The mesogenic compounds may contain a cationic group such as an ammonium or phosphonium group bonded to an alkyl chain that is terminally bonded to a para-substituted pyrimidyl benzene moiety. The counterion can be an organic or inorganic anion. The compounds can be used either as dopants in art ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions to reduce image sticking, or can be used as the primary or predominant component of a liquid crystal display system. Additional compounds, devices, and methods are disclosed.
