    from two and/or four porphyrin units. These molecules form stable complexes with fullerenes in a toluene solution and exhibit selectivity towards C70. The observed fullerene–porphyrin contacts suggest cooperative behaviour of closely separated porphyrin units attracting C60 or C70. Measurements show efficient quenching of porphyrin fluorescence emission.

    Polythiacalix[4]amides as a novel category of polyamides, with high sorption capability towards some environmentally hazardous metal cations, especially Hg2+, have been synthesized via direct polycondensation protocol using a thiacalix[4] arene dicarboxylic acid and commercial diamines. The polyamides were obtained in high yields and possess inherent viscosities in the range of 0.55-0.75 dl/g. The

    Calix[4]arene diacetate and tetraacetate together with their tetrathia-analogs served as starting compounds for the synthesis of novel porphyrin-calixarene conjugates. The introduction of monoaminotetraphenylporphyrin gave corresponding calixarene derivatives, bearing two or four porphyrin units on the lower calixarene rim. These compounds, immobilized in the cone conformation, possess interesting photophysical properties. The absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of the synthesized diporphyrins and tetraporphyrins reveal exciton coupling between the porphyrin units. The flexibility of the amidic bridges accounts for tuning of the degree of porphyrin coupling by the solvent polarity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All fights reserved.

    Starting from the thiacalix[4]arene tetraacetate, novel derivatives bearing four ureido or thioureido functions on the lower rim have been prepared. As proven by NMR titrations, these compounds can bind anions via hydrogen bonding interactions and represent the first example of anion receptors in the thiacalixarene series. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.     New di- (2) and tetracarboxylate ligands (4) were prepared on a sulfonylcalix[4]arene platform by O-alkylation of thiacalix[4]arene with ethyl bromoacetate, followed by hydrolysis of the ester function and oxidation of the sulfide bridges. The sulfonyl-based ligands 2 and 4 formed luminescent 1:1 complexes with terbium(III) ion having higher luminescent quantum yield (Phi = 0.29, and 0.28(7), respectively) than 1:1 complexes of the corresponding thiacalix[4]arene-based di- (1) and tetracarboxylate ligands (3) (Phi = 0.03(8) and 0.00(3), respectively), implying higher efficiency of sulfonyl ligands (2 and 4) than those of thia ligands (1 and 3) in the energy transfer process.
