Coupling of carboxylicacids with O-2-methylprenyl hydroxylamine provided O-protected hydroxamic acids, which could be deprotected by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in dichloromethane giving volatile by-products. Protected hydroxamic acids could be N-arylated or alkylated followed by deprotection to give N-substituted hydroxamic acids.

An efficient one‐pot synthesis of hydroxamicacids from aldehydes and hydroxylamine is described. A fast, visible‐light‐mediated metal‐free hydroacylation of dialkyl azodicarboxylates was used to develop the subsequent addition of hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The first synthesis of hydroxamicacidsfrom alcohols has been developed. Both benzylic and aliphatic alcohols can be tolerated and applied in this reaction. The methodology is economical, environmentally benign and high yielding.
