Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von 5-Hydroxymethylimidazolen, bei dem man das Imidazol mit Formaldehyd oder einem Oligomeren des Formaldehyds in wäßriger salzsaurer Lösung mit einem Gehalt von 5 bis 18 Gew.% Chlorwasserstoff bei Temperaturen von 80 bis 160° C und gegebenenfalls in einem geschlossenen System unter Druck umsetzt und das erhaltene 5-Hydroxymethylimidazol in Form seines Hydrochlorids isoliert.
