  An advantageous process for producing cresols which comprises the steps of: preparing a solution of oxidation products containing tertiary and primary hydroperoxides by oxidizing cymene with oxygen, lowering the content of the primary hydroxides by the reaction of the above solution with both of an organic quaternary ammonium salt and an alkali, or an organic quaternary ammonium hydroxide, decomposing the resultant solution in the presence of a catalyst, and hydrotreating the decomposed solution.
