Thiophene derivatives with multiple substitutions are prepared from vinylidene bromide, which is synthesized by the reaction of thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde with carbon tetrabromide in the presence of PPh(3), as a core molecule through several coupling reactions such as Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and palladium-catalyzed CH arylation. The reactions with a wide variety of organic halides lead to a series of substituted thiophene derivatives in moderate to good yields. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

2D-Π-A Type Organic Dyes Based on N,N-Dimethylaryl Amine and Rhodamine-3-acetic Acid for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells
Three organicdyes XS17–19 based on N,N‐dimethylaryl amine and rhodamine‐3‐acetic acid moieties are designed and synthesized. These dyes were applied into nanocrystalline TiO2 dye‐sensitized solarcells through standard operations, showing strong absorption bands at around 320–650 nm, and exhibiting broad IPCE responses. Cellbased on XS17 gave a Jsc of 3.7 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage of 550 mV
