The stabilized anion [Ph2P(S)]2CH}− with lithium as counter cation 1a reacts with formaldehyde or benzaldehyde to give vinylidene phosphine sulfides [Ph2P(S)]2CCHR, where R is H or Ph, respectively (3, 4). The same anion with potassium as counter cation 1b gives vinyl phosphine sulfides (9−11). The formation of these two different classes of compounds is dependent on the the cation and the solvent

A new unsymmetrical geminaldianion that contained both a phosphine oxide moiety and a phosphine sulfide moiety has been synthesized. Its reactivity towards RuII was explored, which led to the formation of a highly reactive carbene complex that evolved at room temperature to yield a kinetic orthometalated RuII complex through CHactivation of the phenyl group of the phosphine oxide moiety. The synthesis and structures of the thiophosphoryl- and amino-substituted metallated ylide [Ph2(Pip)P=C−P(S)Ph2]M (M=Li, Na, K) are reported. The structures of the alkali metal salts (hexamer, dimer, monomer) reflect the stabilizing effects responsible for charge delocalization and show that the piperidyl moiety, albeit not coordinating to the metal, decisively contributes to the overall stability

The present invention is generally directed to luminescent lanthanide compounds with phosphine oxide, phosphine oxide-sulfide, pyridine N-oxide, and phosphine oxide-pyridine N-oxide ligands. It also relates to electronic devices in which the active layer includes a lanthanide complex.
