  Tubular supramolecular aggregates are formed from glycolipids 1, which are closely related to natural components of membranes of archaebacteria. The glycolipids exhibit disordered columnar thermotropic and hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phases. Whereas formation of the mesophases is insensitive to stereochemical factors, formation of the tubules is dependent on the configuration of the stereocenters
