  Novel hydroquinone derivatives of the formulae (I) and (II),    wherein R¹ is an alkyl group having 7 to 11 carbon atoms,    wherein each of R² to R⁵ is independently a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group provided that at least one of R² to R⁵ is a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, and R⁶ is an alkyl group having a carbon chain of at least 2 carbon atoms. as compounds having antioxidant activity and tumor incidence inhibiting activity, and an antioxidant and a tumor incidence inhibitor containing, as an active ingredient, a hydroquinone derivative of the formula (III),    wherein each of R⁷ to R¹⁰ is independently a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, and R¹¹ is an alkyl group having a carbon chain of at least 2 carbon atoms, and/or a salt thereof.

  Trp-P-1 (1a) and Trp-P-2 (1b) possessing a pyrido[4,3-b]indole system have been newly synthesized. The key reaction step in the synthetic sequence has been the thermal electrocyclic reaction of the 1-azahexa-1,3,5-triene system 3 involving the indole [b] bond derived from 2-vinylindoles 4. 2-Vinylindole 4a has been derived from N-(benzenesulfonyl)indole (5) in a four-step sequence. 2-Vinylindole 4b has been synthesized by two routes using either ethoxymethylidene Meldrum's acid (6b) or diethyl ethoxymethylidenemalonate (10) as Michael acceptors to the 2-lithio-N-(benzenesulfonyl)indole.

  A potent mutagen, 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido [4, 3-b] indole, isolated from tryptophan pyrolysate, and some analogs were synthesized. The key reaction was the AlCl3-catalyzed condensation of 2-cyanomethylindole and alkyl (or phenyl) cyanide.
