A new system for the selective synthesis of bisdimethylamine derivatives using diols and aqueous dimethylamine as the starting materials was developed. An iridium complex bearing an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand was used as the catalyst, and the reaction proceeded based on the borrowing hydrogen strategy in an aqueous medium under mild conditions.
