    Preparation of polymer latex particles carrying salt-responsive fluorescent graft chains

    We prepared the novel fluorescent polymer latex particles which can change their fluorescence intensity in response to the increasing NaCl concentration in water. Core polymer latex particles were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of styrene and 2-(2-chloroisobutyroyloxy)ethyl methacrylate. Hydrophilic polymer chains containing epoxy groups were grafted from the core particles by surface-initiated atom transfer radical copolymerization of methoxy polyethyleneglycol methacrylate (MEO(x)MA, x = 4 or 9) and glycidyl methacrylate in aqueous media. After azidation of epoxy groups in graft chains, a water-soluble fluorescent dansyl derivative was successfully coupled with the graft chains by copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition in aqueous media. The wavelength of maximum fluorescence intensity of polymer particles carrying graft chains with longer PEG side chains (x = 9) was slightly blue-shifted (7 nm) and the fluorescence intensity increased (1.35 times) with an increase in NaCl concentration as opposed to polymer particles with shorter PEG chains (x = 4).     Provided is a catalyst used for a living radical polymerization method, which contains a central element consisting of carbon and at least one halogen atom binding to the central element. Further, a hydrocarbon compound can be used as a catalyst precursor. A monomer having a radical-reactive unsaturated bond is subjected to a radical polymerization reaction in the presence of the catalyst, consequently a polymer having narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained, and thus the cost of the living radical polymerization can be remarkably reduced. The present invention is significantly more environmentally friendly and economically excellent than conventional living radical polymerization methods, due to advantages such as low toxicity of the catalyst, low amount of the catalyst used, high solubility of the catalyst, mild reaction conditions, and no coloration/no odor (no need of any post-treatments for a molded article), and the like.

    A living radical polymerization initiator represented by the following: wherein, R1 represents an aromatic, an alkylcarbonyl, an alkoxycarbonyl, an aminocarbonyl, an alkylaminocarbonyl, a dialkylaminocarbonyl, an arylcarbonyl, an alkylsulfonyl, an aryl sulfonyl or combinations thereof; R2, R3, R4 and R5 are a hydrogen, an aliphatic, an aromatic, an alkylcarbonyl, an alkoxycarbonyl, an aminocarbonyl, an alkylaminocarbonyl, a dialkylaminocarbonyl, an arylcarbonyl, a carboxy, an alkylsulfonyl or an aryl sulfonyl; X and Y are a halogen; m and n are an integer of 1 or more, and are non-symmetrical so that X and Y have different reactivities to initiate a living radical polymerization.

    It is intended to provide a method whereby a virus and leukocytes can be simultaneously eliminated from virus-containing blood and platelets can be recovered at a high yield, and a material and an apparatus therefor. A water-soluble carrier having surface which is capable of capturing a virus and leukocytes in blood but allows the permeation of platelets therethrough is brought into contact with virus-containing blood. Thus the virus and leukocytes can be simultaneously removed from the blood while platelets can be recovered at a high yield.
