    Thromboresistant materials are described which incorporate pyrazinone compounds of the Formula I: 1 wherein X is O, NR 11 or CH=N, R 3 -R 11 , R a , R b , R c , W, m, and n are set forth in the specification, as well as hydrates, solvates or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The compounds of the invention are potent inhibitors of proteases, especially trypsin-like serine proteases, such as chymotrypsin, trypsin, thrombin, plasmin and factor Xa. Certain of the compounds exhibit antithrombotic activity via direct, selective inhibition of thrombin. Compositions for inhibiting loss of blood platelets, inhibiting formation of blood platelet aggregates, inhibiting formation of fibrin, inhibiting thrombus formation, and inhibiting embolus formation are described. Other uses of compounds of the invention are as anticoagulants either embedded in or physically linked to materials used in the manufacture of devices used in blood collection, blood circulation, and blood storage, such as catheters, blood dialysis machines, blood collection syringes and tubes, blood lines and stents. Additionally, the compounds can be detectably labeled and employed for in vivo imaging of thrombi.

    A screening method for the determination of 10⁴ gram negative bacteria per milliliter of an undiluted urine sample and a unitary screening test device for the determination of at least 10⁵ gram negative bacteria per milliliter of an undiluted urine sample. The method and test device make use of Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) and a synthetic substrate containing a chromogenic or fluorogenic leaving group capable of being cleaved by activated lysate. This screening method and unitary screening device provide a quick, convenient, inexpensive indication of the possible presence of a urinary tract infection caused by gram negative bacteria.

A pigment dispersion including vinyl polymer particles containing A and B: A: an azo pigment represented by the following formula (1), a tautomer thereof, a salt thereof, a hydrate thereof, or a solvate thereof, B: a vinyl polymer containing a structural unit (a) having a non-aromatic alicyclic group bonded to the polymer main chain via a linking group, and a structural unit (b) having a hydrophilic group, wherein Q represents a nonmetallic atomic group necessary to form a 5-, 6- or 7-membered heterocyclic ring together with a carbon atom; W represents an alkoxy group, an amino group, an alkyl group or an aryl group; each of X1 and X2 independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an acyl group, an alkylsulfonyl group, or an arylsulfonyl group; R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent; R2 represents a heterocyclic group; n represents an integer of 1 to 4, and when n is 2, formula (1) represents a dimer via Q, W.
