Extended Structures Supported by Hydrogen Bonding and π-π Interaction: Syntheses and Characterizations of Two Complexes with Phenyl Imidazole Dicarboxylates

By hydrothermal reactions of Cd(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O and MnCl2 with 2-(p-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (p-MOPhH3IDC) in the presence of 2,2 '-bipyridine (2,2 '-bipy), and 2-(p-methylphenyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (p-MePhH3IDC), respectively, two novel supramolecular complexes, [Cd(p-MOPhH2IDC)(2)(2,2 '-bipy)] (1) and [Mn(p-MePhH2IDC)(2)(H2O)(2)] (2), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, and IR spectroscopy. The existences of both hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions between the aromatic groups contribute to the structural stabilities of 1 and 2. Furthermore, thermal and photoluminescent properties of the two complexes have been investigated.
