Formation of Cationic Intermediates upon the Activation of Bis(imino)pyridine Nickel Catalysts

The activation of bis(imino)pyridine nickel(II) dichloride complexes [LNiCl2] with methylalumoxane (MAO) and AlMe3/[CPh3][B(C6F5)(4)] was studied by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Formation of similar outer-sphere ion pairs of the types [LNiMe](+)[MeMAO](-) and [LNiMe](+)[B(C6F5)(4)](-), capable of promoting norbornene polymerization, was observed.
