    A novel solid-state reversible fluorescence photoswitching system (FPS) based on photochromism of photochromic pyrazolones has been developed by employing phosphor Sr2P2O7 co-doped with europium ion and chlorine ion (Sr2P2O7-EC) and 1,3-dipheny1-4-(3-chlorobenzal)-5-hydroxypyrazole-4-phenylsemicarbazone (la) as the fluorescence dye and the photochromic compound, respectively. With carefully selected components, the absorption band of the keto-form photochromic pyrazolones well overlaps with the emission peak of Sr2P2O7-EC. The fluorescence emission intensity of Sr2P2O7-EC is efficiently modulated by the photoisomerization of la with controlling the exposure time in the solid state. The fluorescence photoswitching system displayed high fluorescence quenching efficiency and remarkable fatigue resistance. It can be repeated 7 cycles without observable the changes of emission intensity. A fluorescence quenching efficiency can be achieved with a reversible colour change from white to yellow.   • Aggregation-induced emission, photochromism and self-assembly of pyrazolone phenlysemicarbazones

    Four pyrazolone phenylsemicarbazone derivatives, 1,3-dipheny1-4-(3-substituent)-5-hydroxypyrazole 4-phenylsemicarbazone [substituent = chlorolbenzal (1), fluorobenzal (2), bromobenzal (3) and benzal (4)], were synthesized. On the one hand, the four compounds exhibit good solid-state photochromic behaviors upon the irradiation of UV light and heat, and high fatigue resistance. On the other hand, they have aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. The emission could also be greatly enhanced by cooling solutions, suggesting that the aggregation-induced emission is caused by the restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral aromatic rings or other substituents around the central pyrazole ring. In addition, with the increase of the aging time, aggregates of these compounds can self-assemble into 1D nanostructures from 0D nanoballs by the reprecipitation, leading to the red-shift of emission spectra. Thus, it paves the way for preparing multifunctional materials with photochromic and AIE behaviors. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
  • Preparation and photochromic properties of pyrazolones/polyvinyl alcohol composite films

    Novel photochromic composite films have been successfully fabricated by dispersing pyrazolone derivative: 1,3-Dipheny1-4-(3-chlorobenzal)-5-hydroxypyrazole 4-phenylsemicarbazone (1a) into hydrosol of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The microstructure, photochromic behaviors and thermal bleaching properties were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis). The results showed that la was not only blended but also well dispersed in the PVA polymer films with a suitable content of chromophore. Upon UV light irradiation, the composite films gradually changed from colorless to yellow and recovered fully to the initial state upon thermal bleaching. The time constants of photochromic reactions were almost the same as those of la observed in their crystalline state, indicating that the photochromic phenomenon is barely disturbed by the polymer matrix. 2016 Chinese Chemical Society and Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
