  1,3-Di-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazolium iodide (RaaiR'I-+(2)-) has been used to prepare iodocuprate(I) and iod oargentate(I) complexes. The structural confirmation has been carried out by single crystal X-ray diffraction study in representative cases. Iodo bridged anion, [Cu-2(mu-I)(2)I-2](2-), serves as charge support to dialkylazoimidazolium ion (RaaiR'(+)(2)). Silver(I) compound is a trimeric iodo-bridged [Ag3I5](2-) that forms ID chain while imidazolium ion. RaaiR'(+)(2), is penetrating into the network. Electrostatic interaction between organic cation and inorganic anion and supramolecular interactions viz. hydrogen bonding, D-H-pi, pi-pi interactions contribute to the crystal packing.   PbI2 forms iodo-bridged neutral polymer upon reaction with 1-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazoles (RaaiR'). The reaction of PbI2 and dialkyl imidazolium iodides [RaaiR'R"]I-+(-) has synthesized 1,3-dialkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazolium}(m)-tri-iodoplumbate(II)}(m). The complexes are characterized by different spectroscopic studies. Iodobridged chelated polymer, [Pb(RaaiR')I-2]n, has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements in one case. Tri-iodoplumbates form iodo bridged anion polymer, which connects [RaaiR'R"](+) by hydrogen bonding and are placed in between the pillars of [Pb(mu-I)(6)](n), motif. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
