Synthesis, spectral characterization and structure of dinuclear double-helical mercury complex containing bis[4-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenyl]methane ligand

The bis[4-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenyl]methane ligand L and it's dinuclear double-helical mercury complex, 1 have been synthesized and characterized by CHN analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The crystal structures of L and 1 were determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecule of ligand L is generated by a crystallographic two-fold axis and adopts an E configuration with respect to the C=N bond. The dihedral angles between the planes of the pyridine ring, chelate ring, and the benzene ring in L show coplanarity of these planes, leading to a considerable planarity of these moieties. The two phenyl rings of the diarylmethane spacer of L are inclined at an angle of 8.75 degrees to one another, so that L forms an appreciable V shape. The asymmetric unit of 1 contains two independent Hg atoms, two ligands and four nitrate anions. The ligands wrap around the two mercury canters forming a double-helical structure. Three nitrate anions act as a bidentate ligand and the other nitrate anion is uncoordinated. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
