    Alkylene glycols and their ethers are obtained by contacting a mixture of CO and H2 with a catalyst system at a pressure of at least 35 bars (e.g. 135-625 bars) and at a temperature of at least 180°C (e.g. 180-250°C). The catalyst system comprises ruthenium(III) acetylacetonate and rhodium (III) acetylacetonate dispersed in a low melting quaternary phosphonium or ammonium base or salt. Using this catalyst system hydrocarbon formation is largely avoided and the catalyst may be recycled without loss of activity.

    Olefins may be converted by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen into good yields of aldehydes and alcohols in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst dispersed in a low-melting quaternary phosphonium or ammonium salt or base, the presence of which enables the conversion of C8-C20 internal olefins to be readily achieved, with high yields of alcohols in a manner not previously possible. The linearity of the alcohol and aldehyde products may be increased by dispersing the ruthenium catalyst in the low-melting quaternary phosphonium compound in association with a tertiary amine or phosphine.

    Synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) can be converted highly selectively into alkanols, especially methanol, by reaction at a temperature of at least 150 °C and a pressure of at least 35 bars in the presence of a catalyst comprising a ruthenium compound, a rhenium or manganese compound, and a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound, in the presence of an inert oxygenated solvent (ketone, ester, alcohol or preferably ether). Preferably a Group VB donor ligand, e.g. triphenyl phosphine, is also present.
