  A defoliating composition comprising a compound having the structural formula wherein R is F, Cl, 3-Br, 4-Br, I, CN or CX3, where X is F, Cl or Br; R' is hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl; and R2 is C1-C4 alkyl and a carrier for said compound is disclosed. A method of defoliating a plant using the above specified compound is also described. Also described is a novel compound of the above formula where R is 2-fluoro, 2-chloro, 2-iodo, 2-cyano or 2-CX, and X is F, Cl or Br; R' is hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl and R2 is C1-C4 alkyl. A method of making the novel compound is also described.
