  cis-Dihydroxylation of olefins with a catalytic amount of osmium tetroxide and N-methylmorpholine N-oxide proceeds smoothly in an organic solvent by the use of dihydroxyphenyiborane, giving the corresponding 2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane derivatives (phenylboronic esters) in good yields.
