    This invention relates to novel UV absorbers, their methods of preparation, their use in stabilizing polymers and polymers so stabilized against the degradative effects of UV light. The novel compounds of formula I are oxamides which are substituted on one or both nitrogens with a 2-hydroxy-3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)benzyl group. The 2-hydroxy-3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)benzyl groups are efficient UV absorbing groups and the oxamide group contributes additional light stabilizing, heat stabilizing and metal complexing properties to the compounds. The compounds have low-volatility and are especially useful as UV stabilizers for engineering resins processed at high temperatures.

    A polyolefin composition contains (1) from 0.01 to 1.0 part by weight of tris(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-isocyanurate, (2) from 0.01 to 0.5 part by weight of a pentaerythritol diphosphite compound represented by the formula: where R, represents a methyl group, a tertiary butyl group or a tertiary amyl group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, a tertiary butyl group, a tertiary amyl group, a phenyl group or a cyclohexyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or a tertiary butyl group and R4 represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or a tertiary butyl group, provided that not all of R2, R3 and R4 simultaneously represent hydrogen atoms, (3) from 0.01 to 1.0 part by weight of one compound selected from phenyl benzoate compounds, benzotriazole compounds and benzophenone compounds and (4) from 0.01 to 1.0 part by weight of a heterocyclic hindered amine compound which are blended with 100 parts by weight of a polyolefin. Extremely excellent light stability, particularly, at high temperature is obtained.

    A battery jar material for sealed secondary batteries comprising a resin composition which comprises 50 to 98 % by weight of (A) a styrenic polymer having a syndiotactic configuration, 2 to 50 % by weight of (B) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of polyolefins and styrenic elastomers, and 0 to 10 % by weight of (C) a polyphenylene ether, or a resin composition which comprises 100 parts by weight of a resin component having the same composition as the above resin composition, 1 to 350 parts by weight of (D) an inorganic filler, and 0 to 5 parts by weight of (E) a polyphenylene ether modified with a polar group; and a battery jar for sealed secondary batteries made of this material.
