  Tertiary amines bearing an hydroxyethyl group derived from phenylglycinol, norephedrine or norpseudoephedrine can be selectively dealkylated using a two-step sequence involving treatment with thionyl chloride in THF, followed by reaction with an excess of potassium cyanide in THF:DMSO.
