    The conditions for acylation of 2,5-dimethylthiophene with squaric, acid dichloride were optimized, and 3,4-bis(2,5-dimethylthiophen-3-yl)cyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione was obtained in good yield. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the by-product has the structure of 1a,1b-dichloro-5-(2,5-dimethylthiophen-3-yl)-3-hydroxy-4,5a-dimethyl-1b,4a,5,5a-tetrahydro-1aH-1-thiacyclopropa[a]pentalen-2-one.

    In a first aspect, the present invention relates to new compounds as depicted in formula (I). In particular, compounds according to the present invention are bisindolylcyclobuten-dione-based structures having antiprotozoal activity. In a further aspect, pharmaceutical compositions containing the same are provided as well as the use of the compounds and pharmaceutical compositions for the prophylaxis and treatment of parasite based diseases including malaria. Finally, methods for the treatment of parasite diseases including malaria are provided.

    Ligands 1 and 2 underwent quantitative photooxidation when they were reacted with singlet oxygen sensitized by methylene blue. However, the quantitative reaction became self-sensitized for the compound Ru(1) wherein the ruthenium complex acted as a sensitizer.

    Different types of diarylethenes bearing thiophene derivatives were synthesized by a short way and its photchromic properties were examined. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the photochromism of diarylcyclobutenediones depends on aryl substituents and dithienylcyclobutenediones in contrast to the annulated thiophene derivatives of cyclobutenedione, do not exhibit photochromic properties. An efficient approach for the synthesis of spiro compounds of the thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole series was developed starting from easily accessible substituted thienylhydrazine.
