The reaction of 1,3,5,7-tetraazatricyclo[3.3.1.1(3,7)]decane, trivial name hexamethylenetetramine (hmt), and HgI2 (molar ratio 1:1) in ethanol or acetone diiodide (1:1), gives the title compound, catena-poly [diiodomercury-mu-1,3,5 ,7-tetraazatricyclo [3.3.1.1(3,7)] decane-N-1:N-5], [HgI2(C6H12N4)] (HgI2.hmt). The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound have been determined by X-ray structure analysis. HgI2.hmt belongs to the class of donor-acceptor complexes between hmt and metal salts. Hg is fourfold coordinated by two I and two hmt ligands. hmt acts as a bifunctional bridging ligand forming bent (-Hg-hmt-)(n) chains in the b direction of the Pnma space group.
