A novel multi-component reaction of indoles, formaldehydes, and tertiary aromatic amines is described for the synthesis of dialkylaminoarylated indoles using silica-supported perchloric acid (HClO4–SiO2) as an inexpensive and highly efficient catalyst. Metal and acid-free visible light-induced Friedel-Crafts C3-alkylation reactions of indolederivatives were developed using N,N-dimethylanilines as the carbon source. A cheap and readily available organic dye, Rose Bengal, was applied as the photocatalyst. This environmentally friendly transformation afforded C3-alkylated indoles in moderate to good yields under mild conditions.
