A straightforward pyrrole synthesis from diallylamines is developed by using a tandem catalyst system leading to ring-closing metathesis with the second generation Grubbs' catalyst (10%) followed by dehydrogenation in the presence of RuCl3 x H2O (2%). (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

N-Benzyloxy-β-lactams were prepared from N-benzyloxyimines by reaction with ketene trimethylsilyl acetals in the presence of trimethylsilyl triflate followed by cyclization, or with lithium ester enolates in one step.

Irradiation at 366 nm of 2-(N-allyl-N-alkylamino)cyclohex-2-enones led, surprisingly, to very unstable 1-azaspiro[2.5]octan-4-ones rather than to the expected [2 + 2] intramolecular photo-cycloaddition.
