  Two beta-(alkyl)-beta-hydroxy-alpha-amino acids [alkyl = But, BnO-(CH2)(3)-] have been synthesized by a sequence based on Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation. The key sulfate intermediates were prepared from enantiomerically enriched diols by direct treatment with sulfuryl chloride.
