Compound 1 was found to be the most inactive catalyst among the dimethylsulfonio derivatives of salicylaldehyde, but the most active catalyst among the other salicylaldehyde derivatives examined in the racemization of L-glutamic acid at pH 10 and at 80 °C in the presence of copper(II) ion in the initial stage of the reaction.
