    A process is described for the production of 1,4-butanediol and tetrahydrofuran by catalytic hydrogenation of dialkyl maleates. The process consists essentially in the following steps: a) hydrogenating a stream of dialkyl maleate in a first stage of reaction over suitable catalysts to produce dialkyl succinate; b) further hydrogenating the dialkyl succinate in a second stage of reaction, by using a different suitable catalyst, for producing mainly 1,4-butanediol, together with gamma-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran as co-products. In both stages of reaction the conditions, as hydrogen/ organic feed ratio, pressure and temperature, are such to maintain the reactors in mixed liquid/vapor phase.

    A copper chromite hydrogenation catalyst of enhanced activity is obtained by an ante-pre-reduction treatment in which a copper chromite catalyst precursor is soaked in a reducing atmosphere at temperatures below a pre-­reduction temperature (typically about 140°C) at which appreciable pre-reduction of the catalyst can be detected. This catalyst is characterised by particles of reduced copper substantially all of which have an average particle size of less than about 300 x 10⁻¹⁰m (300Å), which have an average particle size of less than about 100 x 10⁻¹⁰m (100Å), and which are substantially uniformly distributed on a chromium-containing support. Typically such catalysts exhibit a copper surface area of about 18.5 m²/g as determined by N₂O decomposition at 20°C, compared to a corresponding copper surface area of 4.5 m²/g for a catalyst which has been produced by conventional pre-reduction of the same catalyst precursor.

    (EN) $i(Gamma)-butyrolactone is produced by vapour phase hydrogenolysis of an alkyl ester of a C4 dicarboxylic acid, e.g. diethyl maleate, over a reduced Cu-Cr or Cu-Zn mixed oxide catalyst. Two adiabatic hydrogenolysis zones are used. The mixture exiting the first of these zones is heated (by, for example 5oC) and the resulting heated mixture is fed to the second zone in which it reequilibriates at a higher temperature to increase the butane-1,4-diol yield at the expense of butane-1,4-diol. Typical reaction conditions include use of temperatures of 190oC to 260oC, pressures of 3 to 30 bar, and an H2:ester molar ratio of 50:1 to 1000:1.(FR) Du gamma-butyrolactone est produit par hydrogénolyse en phase vapeur d'un ester d'alkyle d'un acide bicarboxylique C4, par exemple du maléate de diéthyle, sur un catalyseur réduit d'oxydes mélangés de Cu-Cr ou Cu-Zn.
