A novel approach to the resolution of this ambiguity, involving determination of the activity of model compounds, is presented. The total synthesis of some of these compounds, which are based on the 7(8→11α)abeoestrane ring system, is described. The biological activity of this class of compounds is found to provide evidence of the importance of the spatial characteristics of estrogens.
