    An electrochromic display element includes a pair of counter electrodes having therebetween an electrochromic compound represented by Formula (1), wherein the electrochromic compound becomes colored when being oxidized and becomes colorless when being reduced by a driving operation of the electrodes: wherein R 1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; and R 2 and R 3 each represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent; X represents >N—R 4 , an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; and R 4 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent.

    Provided is a novel electrochemical display element which performs bright white display, high contrast black/white display and full-color display with a simple member configuration. A method for driving such display element is also provided. The display element contains an electrochromic compound, which is colored or has its color disappear due to oxidation or reduction, a metallic salt compound, an electrolyte and a white scattered material, between opposing electrodes. The display element substantially performs multiple color display of three colors or more, i.e., black display, white display and colored display other than black, by driving operation of the opposing electrodes.

    This invention provides a novel process for producing an electrochemical display element, which can easily form a white scattering layer between opposed electrodes, has a high level of suitability for production, and has high stability after long-term use. The production process is characterized in that a film containing a white scattering material and a polymeric binder is formed on at least one electrode in opposed electrodes, the other electrode is disposed so as to face the electrode with film formed thereon, a low-viscosity electrolyte is poured into a space between the opposed electrodes, and the polymeric binder is dissolved in or swollen in the electrolyte to form a gel-like electrolyte layer containing the white scattering material and the polymeric binder within the space.

    Disclosed is a method of manufacturing an electrochromic display element having improved durability. Specifically disclosed is a method of manufacturing a display element containing opposed electrodes and a porous layer which is arranged between the opposed electrodes and containing a metal oxide and an electrochromic dye supported on the metal oxide. The method contains the step of applying plural kinds of inks to the porous layer by an inkjet apparatus, wherein the inks are capable of uniformizing the amount of the electrochromic dye supported on the porous layer containing the metal oxide in one pixel of the display element.

    Disclosed is an electrochromic display element which can achieve a bright white display, a high contrast of white/black display and a full-color display in a simple member structure. In a display element, an electrolyte is contained between counter electrodes. A compound represented by Formula (A) is immobilized on at least one of the counter electrodes, wherein the ratio of the region on which the compound represented by Formula (A) is immobilized to the region on which the compound is not immobilized is 1:4 to 4:1. The electrolyte comprises a metal salt compound. A black display, a white display and a color display having a color other than black are achieved by operating the counter electrodes. In Formula (A), R 22 represents a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; R 23 and R 24 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent; X represents >N—R 25 , an oxygen atom or sulfur atom; and R 25 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent.
