  O2-Substituted 1-[(2-carboxylato)pyrrolidin-1-yl] diazeniumdiolates are stable in aqueous solution and, in many cases, they can be activated for NO release by enzymatic action. Furthermore, if an N-nitroso derivative is formed by net formal cleavage of the N-N double bond of the 1-[(2-carboxylato)pyrrolin-1-yl]diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate, the N-nitroso compound is noncarcinogenic. Such compounds are believed to be particularly useful in the treatment of fulminant liver failure, malaria, respiratory problems, impotence, and a variety of cardiovascular/hematologic disorders.
