Fusedpyranocarbazolones were synthesized from the reactions of hydroxycarbazoles with ethyl propiolate in the presence of catalytic amount of I nCl 3. Carbalkoxypyranocarbazolones and methylenefurocarbazolones were obtained from the reactions of hydroxycarbazoles with dialkyl acetylene dicarboxylates in the presence of Ph 3P in refluxing toluene.
