  • Symmetric and non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers with branched terminal alkyl chains: racemic and chiral

    Two new series of racemic dimeric liquid crystals containing terminal alkyl chains with methyl branches are presented; in one the dimers are symmetric and in the other they are non-symmetric. Comparisons are made with the structurally isomeric series with no methyl branches in their terminal alkyl chains. The stability and clearing temperatures of the liquid crystal phases are markedly reduced for the dimers with methyl branches, particularly for the symmetric dimers. Chiral analogues of both series were also examined. The liquid crystal behaviour of the non-symmetric dimers is of particular interest. Four homologues were studied with the number of methylene units in the spacer ranging from six to nine. An odd–even effect was observed for the chiral properties of these materials. Blue phase I behaviour was exhibited by the heptane and nonane homologues but not by the even membered hexane and octane members of the series.

  • Liquid crystal tetramers

    The first homologous series of liquid crystal tetramers in which four mesogenic groups are linked via three alkyl spacers has been synthesised and characterised. The length of the outer two spacers is varied from 3 to 12 methylene units while the central spacer is held at 8 methylene units. All the members of the series exhibit enantiotropic nematic behaviour except for the decyl and dodecyl homologues which exhibit exclusively smectic A behaviour. In addition, smectic A behavior is observed for the hexyl to dodecyl homologues. The transitional properties, namely the clearing temperatures and associated entropy changes, exhibit a dramatic odd–even effect as the length and parity of the outer spacers are varied. This behaviour is interpreted in terms of how the spacers control the average molecular shape. The ratio of the smectic periodicity to the estimated all trans molecular length for the nonyl homologue is just 0.27. Three differing local packing arrangements are suggested to account for this surprising result.

  • Novel liquid crystal aldoximes and aldoxime ethers: Synthesis, characterization and liquid crystal behavior

    This study describes synthesis and characterization of new liquid crystal aldoximes and aldoxime ethers in detail. Firstly, 4'-(6-bromohexyloxy)bipheny1-4-carbonitrile, 4'-(8-bromooctylox)bipheny1-4-carbonitrile and 4'-(10-bromoodecyloxy)bipheny1-4-carbonitrile derivatives were synthesized, respectively. Then, with this compound, condensation reaction was determined to p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and new aldehyde derivatives were synthesized. This aldehyde derivatives were converted to new oxime derivatives, not found in the literature. Then, these new oxime derivatives were converted to oxime ether derivatives with iodomethane. All of the obtained products were characterized by a combination of FT-IR, H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR and elemental analysis. Then, the liquid crystal properties of these new compounds were determined by using DSC and POM techniques. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
