An aqueous polymer composition comprising 10 to 50 wt% of a polymer in an aqueous medium, the polymer demonstrating a maximum absorbency capacity of at least 10 g of a 1% aqueous saline solution/g polymer and consisting essentially of 25-90 wt% (4, 5),''1% α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, 0-50 wt% (meth)allylsulfonic acid, crosslinking comonomer comprising 0.1-10 wt% latent crosslinking comonomer or 0.01-2 wt% active crosslinking comonomer, or both, and at least one softening monomer in a sufficient amount so that the polymer has a Tg of <140°C, the softening monomer characterized as having a homopolymer that exhibits a Tg≦35°C, the aqueous composition having a viscosity of less than about 3000 mPa and being adjusted to pH 4-7 with alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. Such aqueous compositions can be applied to nonwoven and woven substrates or loose cellulosic fibers to make superabsorbent products.
