Thermal reaction of a sterically bulky diazomethane with elemental sulfur in benzene afforded a novel cyclic polysulfide, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octathionane (1). Molecular structure of 1 was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis and the geometry of its CS8 ring of 1 was compared with that of the theoretically optimized cyclononasulfur (S9).
