Aromatic GLs are important members of the glucosinolate family of compounds because of their potential biological activity and medicinal properties. This study has shown success in the high yielding synthesis of some important aromatic GLs as well as the results of testing for anti-inflammatory properties of the synthetic GLs. 3,4-Dimethoxyphenylglucosinolate was found to be the most active anti-inflammatory of the seven glucosinolates assayed. A mild oxidation method for the conversion of aldoximes to carboxylicacids was developed mediated by hypervalentiodine reagents. This method covers a wide range of functionalized aldoximes and proceeds under mild conditions, utilizing PhI(OH)OTs as an oxidant.

The aryl and alkyl aldehydes were readily converted to give the corresponding nitriles in good yields using hydroxyamine and phthalic anhydride as reagents in one pot.

New 3-aryl-5-cyano-4,5-dihydroisoxazoles possessing liquid crystalline properties were synthesized in two ways. The key stage in both procedures is 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrile oxides to acrylonitrile.
