Cadmium chloride-magnesium-THF-water efficiently reduced aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols, epoxide to mono-alcohol, benzyl halide to toluene, acid chloride to aldehyde and hydrolyzed thioketal to corresponding ketones.
Cyclization of the olefinic β-hydroxy selenide (5) with various catalysts was carried out to give the cyclic compound (9) which was converted to safranal (19) via the olefinic alcohol (14), the diolefinic alcohol (16), and the aldehyde (17).
